Mail call brings smiles from home

Mail call. Two bitty words can bring a lot of happiness to a person far from the swooshing doors of a local store.

The Marines and Sailors of the USS Bonhomme Richard got their first mail call weeks after setting sail from San Diego. Daniel e-mailed his thanks and says he's thinking of ways to put a package of fake mustaches to good use along with the more mundane items in his box…can’t wait for pictures!

Now, more waiting to hear where the ship is headed in that big ol’ sea out there, and it’s time to start putting together the Christmas care package.

Hmmm…ideas, anyone?

Palmetto's Bob Marble sent an along some very useful information for military families:

I thought I'd pass on a tip that you might want to share with the military families with whom you are in touch. I am a resident of Palmetto, nearing the end of a deployment in Iraq with the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces program. Our primary mission is to relay emergency communication messages between families in the 'States and their loved ones deployed overseas in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait.

We maintain rosters listing the various units over here, but locating some of them when a message comes in is not always an easy task, for various reasons. Fortunately, our track record is excellent, but families can increase their chances of getting Red Cross messages to their loved ones in a timely manner if they have good information on hand before an emergency arises. The complete overseas unit address is definitely important, but families should also ask for an overseas DSN phone number (preferably one manned 24 hrs per day) of a point of contact in the member's unit, that we can call in the event the address in the message doesn't match what we have in our roster. I can't tell you how many times that point of contact phone number has helped us get a message to the right unit and to the service member. If you can share that tidbit, I'd appreciate it.

If you know of any Manatee County service members stationed near Baghdad, please tell them to stop by the Red Cross station at Camp Liberty and say "hi."
